Abstract

This study examine the link between changes in socio economic characteristics and poverty level of the farmers in the Samaru Agricultural Development Area of Kaduna State, Nigeria. In terms of research design, this study employed the descriptive (survey) design. Analysis was done with descriptive statistics, Tobit regression and satellites imageries. The analysis of vegetation was done with satellite imageries and the result revealed that the vegetation of the area is on the decline resulting from population pressure. In 1990 the vegetation cover was 6879.22 (44.68%), in the year 2000 it was 6022.21 (39.11%) and in 2018, it declined to 5453.52 (35.42%). The poverty line used for the study was ₦2,944 which was derived from the Monthly Mean per Adult Equivalent Household Expenditure (MPAEHE). 62% of the farming households in the study area were poor, 12% were below core poverty level (i.e people who could not spend more than ₦1,472 a month to buy the basic necessities of life) while 11% of the households were moderately poor. Their monthly consumption per person was below the poverty line of ₦2,944, but more than ₦1,472. Tobit regression model revealed that four out of the six repressors had significant influence on the poverty level of the farming households. The study recommended economic and particularly indigenous trees should be planted in the area.
