GROWTH AND YIELD OF SORGHUM (SORGHUM BICOLOR (L.) MOENCH) VARIETIES AS INFLUENCED BY INFLUENCE OF NITROGEN RATES AND PLANT POPULATION DENSITY

Abstract


Field trials were carried out in the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR) farm at Samaru (11011'N 70 380E) and 686 m above sea level in the northern guinea savanna ecological zone of Nigeria, during the 2012 and 2013 rainy seasons to study the response of sorghum varieties to nitrogen rates and plant population. The treatments consisted of factorial combination of two sorghum varieties (SAMSORG 42 and SAMSORG 43) three rates of nitrogen (0, 40 and 80 kg N ha-1) and three plant populations (40,000, 53,333 and 66,447). These treatments were laid out in a randomized complete block design and replicated three times. The results showed that 40kg N ha-1 and 53,333 plants ha-1 increased plant height, crop growth rate, leaf area index, shoot dry matter and grain yield. Based on the results obtained it can be concluded that application of 40 kg N ha-1 and 53,333 plants ha-1 resulted in highest growth and yield of both varieties.
