EFFECTS OF NITROGEN AND PHOSPHORUS FERTILIZERS APPLICATION METHODS ON THE PERFORMANCE OF GROUNDNUT AT KANO UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY WUDIL FARM

Abstract


A field experiment was conducted at Kano University of Science and Technology Wudil Research Farm Gaya, to assess the effect of nitrogen (N) and phosphorous (P) fertilizers application methods on the performance of groundnut. The treatments consisted of three different fertilizer application methods (band placement, drilling and side dressing methods) and two fertilizer sources (urea as a nitrogen source and single super phosphate as a phosphorous source. The experiment was arranged in a Randomized Completely Block Design, replicated three times. The results show that, side placement of N fertilizer had significantly increased number of pods per plant as well as pod yield per plot, when compared with other methods of fertilizer placement. Therefore, method of fertilizer application has a great influence on the pod number per plant as well as pod yield. Side placement of nitrogen fertilizer has been suggested as the best method when kernel yield is the target of production in the study area.
